CL-1: The World’s First Biological Computer

Introduction: A Computer That is Alive

For years, computer have been made of silicon chip that work on 0s and 1s. CL-1 is completely different. It is the world’s First commercial biological computer, made by Cortical Labs, Australia.

It is not made of only silicon. It is a hybrid computer where 800,000 living human neurons are grown from stem cells on a silicon ship. These living neurons are the real processor of the computer. This technology is called Synthetic Biological Intelligence (SBI) or Wetware.

In simple words, we are not coping the brain anymore, we are using the brain itself.

Core Concept: How Does It Learn?

A normal computer needs to be programmed. CL-1 is trained like a human child.

Its 800,000 neurons are connected to a chip with 59 electrodes. When the neurons do something wrong, they receive a noisy, unpleasant signal. By this feedback, they rewire themselves and learn on their own. It is not programmed, it is trained.

History of CL-1

2016 – 2020:

The Idea: Dr. Hon Weng Chong founded Cortical Labs in Melbourne with a dream to combine living neurons with silicon.

2022:

The DishBrain Breakthrough: The company created DishBrain, the first prototype. They taught 800,000 neurons to play the game Pong in just 5 minutes. This research was published in famous Neuron journal and became world-famous.

2023 - 2024:

Development: The life-support system was improved to keep neurons alive for 6 months. The response time was reduced to less than one millisecond.

March 2025:

Official Launch: CL-1 was launched at MWC Barcellona as the world’s first commercial biological computer. Its price was $35,000. The company also launched biOS and Wetware-as-a-Service.

2026:

The DOOM Milestone: The same biological system learned to play the much more complex 3D game DOOM, providing it can learn goal-directed tasks like a human.

Architecture: Three Simple Layers

CL-1 has three parts, just like human:

  1. The Brain (Wetware): 800,000 living human neurons grown on a 59-electrode chip. This is the processor.
  2. The Body (Bioreactor): A life-support system that works like a heart and lungs. It feeds the neurons, cleans them, and keeps them alive at 36.8C for 6 months. It runs on only`30W, like a small light bulb.
  3. The mind(biOS): An operating system that translates digital information from our world into electrical signals that the neurons can understand.

The Language of Life: How It Stores Data

In a normal computer, data is stored as 0s and 1s. In CL-1, data is stored as life itself.

DNA is the storage, RNA is the messenger, and Protein is the action. A single human cell stores 6 billion base pairs of DNAS, which is more than 1.5GB of data in a space smaller than a microchip.

CL-1 uses the same principle. It does not store data on a hard disk. It stores memory as living connections(synapses). It has 1.2 billion synapses, and it rewires itself to remember things, exactly like our brain does.

How It Works: Living Logic Gates

A silicon computer uses fixed logic gates (0/1). CL-1 uses biochemical logic gates. Its neurons make new connections and break old ones in real-time to sole a problem. This is called self-wiring.

Types of biological Computers

  1. DNA Computer: Can store huge data (215 Petabytes in 1 gram) but is very slow.
  2. Protein Computers: Use chemical reactions, mostly for medical tasks.
  3. Neural Computers (CL-1): Uses living neurons on a chip. It can learn and adapt live. This is the most advanced type.

Why Do We Need It?

Traditional ComputerCL-1 Biological Computer
Silicon chip, works on 1\0s/1s.800,000 living neurons.
Needs thousands of watts.Needs only 30W (1000x more efficient).
Must be programmed for every task.Learns by itself in minutes.
Cannot adapt to new problems.Thinks and adapts to new problems.

We need CL-1 because silicon is reaching its limit. It needs huge power and millions of examples to learn. CL-1 learns in 10-20 trials while AI needs 10,000 trails.

Key Characteristics and Advantages

  1. Living Core: 800,000 real human neurons.
  2. Ultra-Low Power: Only~30W, no heavy cooling needed.
  3. Learns Live: No need for retraining for days.
  4. Real Intelligence: It does not memorize; it thinks and solves new problems.
  5. Speed: Biological response is 1-10ms, but it learns a new task in minutes, not days.

Applications in Medicine and Future Technology

This is where it is revolutionary for biology students:

  1. Drug Discovery: We can test new drugs directly on living human neurons in hours, instead of months of animal testing.
  2. Personalized Medicine: In the future, your own neurons can grow to find which medicine best for you.
  3. Disease Modelling: We can create models of Alzheimer, Epilepsy, and Parkinson’s in the lab to study them.
  4. Brain Repair: It is the base for future brain implants to treat paralysis and brain injuries.

Role in AI and Nanotech: It gives real biological intelligence, not a simulation. Nano-electrodes connect to single neurons and the whole lab is on a single chip.

Challenges and Limitations

  1. Short Lifespan: It lives for only about 6 months and needs 24/7 life support.
  2. Ethical Questions: Is it conscious? There is no law yet for a living computer.
  3. Unstable: Living neurons behave slightly differently every day, so it is not 100% consistent like a silicon chip.

Conclusion: The Future is Biological

Silicon is reaching its limit. CL-1 opens a new era of Biological Intelligence. With 800k living neurons, 30W power, and real learning, it proves that intelligence doesn’t need to be coded, it can be grown.

We stopped copying the brain. We started using it. The future is not artificial, it is biological.
